Super Lathe
Burbank, CA – Comco Inc., industry leader in the manufacture of micro-abrasive blasters, is featured in the September 2009 issue of Product Design & Development magazine. Comco’s chief engineer Mickey Reilley explains the development of micro-abrasive blasting from a manual process to an automated, multi-tasking system. “Our first automated lathe, the LA1500, was designed from a generic standpoint with the goal to adapt it to other applications. It was a basic lathe, a spindle turned a part at a set RPM while the nozzles traveled back and for the over the part, applying the microabrasive blast stream,” explained Reilley. As requests for more complicated functionality arose, the need for a more complex system led to the next step: a computer based and fully CNC lathe – the LA3200. Three years after developing this system, a new faster, cleaner version was developed. It includes a modular spindle that can be replaced with a tooling plate for XYZ motion.
